I'm a Scent-imental Fool

The sense of smell is a powerful thing. So many of my fondest memories are tied to unforgettable smells -- fluffy yeast rolls baking at my elementary school's cafeteria, my mother's pies & other baked goods filling the house with an extraordinary aroma, the fragrance of a freshly-cut Christmas tree, recently-cleaned/waxed hardwood floors, coffee beans, Star Jasmine blossoms, the smell in the air after a thunderstorm... I could go on & on listing some of my favorite scents that are strongly associated with thoughts/memories from past experiences.

Does "lonely" have a distinct smell? It probably smells like something is missing. This week it has been "girls only" at our house, so we have been lonely a time or two. Something's missing when the guys are gone. Mr. Smith is in Texas all week, and M. has been in Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona! (That boy is tough to keep track of!) We girls have been having fun, but we do miss the guys.

How does scent tie in with the fact that the Smith men are gone? I guess you could say that it STINKS when we are alone all week! No, there is another link: Miss Millie learned something about her mother & fragrance this week, so I figured I'd share it with you, too. (You might think that this is silly, but I'll share it any way...)

When Smitty is traveling on business, I squirt my wrists with one of his colognes as I am getting ready for bed. One evening, Millie noticed that I smelled like her daddy when she hugged & kissed me goodnight. I smelled sort of manly, so I had to explain why. Normally she is in bed fast asleep before I get ready for bed, so I had never been "caught" before wearing Daddy's scent. That child has keen olfactory receptors. :-) Thankfully, the girls didn't poke fun at me for being a scent-imental fool -- they thought it was sweet. Awwwww.

I cannot remember when this "just-a-squirt-of-MY-man's-cologne" routine started, but I've been doing this for years. Any time he's traveling, I'm smelling like the man of the household -- at least at bedtime. I LOVE being reminded of how Mr. Smith smells. It also helps to prompt me to pray for my husband before I drift off to sleep. If he's on my mind, he's in my prayers. Then it's time for sweet (aromatic) dreams! Zzzzzz...

My all-time favorite men's fragrance is Burberry Cologne. It will forever be associated with our courtship/early married life. We still have an almost empty bottle of the stuff. I keep it just to have a reminder of what "falling in love" smells like. Now that's sentimental, or just mental! Amazingly, the cologne still smells really good after all those years. Sadly, Burberry cologne was discontinued in the 1990s, but they have come out with a close replacement, Burberry London. It's a woodsy scent with bergamot, and a hint of tobacco.

Another very close replacement is Hugo Boss' Baldessarini -- it has a similar woodsy smell. (That is the fragrance I was wearing when Jr. Dectecto-Nose sniffed me out.) Givenchy is another good one -- vetiver is the predominant tone with some coriander and citrus thrown in for good measure. Last but not least, another Mr. Smith scent is Tommy Bahama's Very Cool. (Who comes up with these names, any way?!) It is light & citrusy, but not sweet... Nothing will ever replace the original scent that my boy wore when we were dating. (Me? I wore Clinique "Wrappings" during the courtship phase. I haven't worn it in years. I believe that it is still being made, but I now prefer Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue or Prescriptive's Calyx, depending upon my mood.) Ever since we learned that Burberry was no longer being made, I have been looking high & low to try to find something that captures that same smell. It simply cannot be recreated -- close, but no cigar.

Speaking of cigars, our neighbor is outdoors smoking an expensive smelling cigar. The aroma wafting over the fence is pungent, yet sweet. It actually smells yummy. I don't normally care for cigar or cigarette smoke, but this is a smell that smells... well, neighborly! I cannot distinguish whether or not the tobacco is Cuban, Honduran, Nicaraguan, or American, but it will forever be associated with living in this specific neighborhood.

I've written enough regarding this "smelly" topic for one day. I need to mop the kitchen floor, so the overpowering aroma of Pine-Sol will soon permeate the air. Although I associate the smell of Pine-Sol with hospitals, it is a clean smell. And a clean floor is much better than a sticky one.

No manly scents for me tonight. My beloved is coming home on the 10 PM flight from DFW. Next week, he's travelin' again, but I'll have Hugo, Tommy, & Givenchy here -- on my wrists -- to keep me company. :-)

They're all wet!

Either these girlie-girls are sooo hot that they are dripping with sweat, or they jumped in the pool with their clothes on. Which option do you prefer?

The temptation of getting cooled off was just too great, so into the water they went -- no swimwear required. Just look at those mischievous grins.

Head 'em up, Move 'em out...

These two guys are real movers & shakers.
It's sad to see Aylesbury emptied out. We're truly going to miss having AJ in Roseville. :-(

Everyone helped to load the U-Haul. Well, they did take time out to pose for the camera. They are well trained & know when to smile. (I love photos, but I'll bet you didn't know that. HA!)

The truck is loaded with goodies bound for the Hoosier state. Everyone is smiling for the photo op. -- even if we are melting in the 106 degree heat. Look out, Mom & Dad! The two truckers (M & UJ) should be pulling the rig into Shelburn on Tuesday night, after traveling ±2,000 miles.

And they're off...

HOT off the grill

Over the weekend, the temps topped the century mark every single day. Our thermometer is in the shade, and it was still reading an even 100 degrees.

"Mister" Millie kept her cool in the mist.

"Two" many cooks...?!
Despite the sweltering heat, Mark & Mr. Smith teamed up to grill several pizzas. It certainly felt hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk. I suppose that we could have tried to cook the dough on the pavement, but we opted for the Weber instead. The pesto chicken 'za was a favorite, and grilled Roma tomatoes were the crowning touch.

What a photogenic pizza!
Yes, the final product tasted as good as it looks.

Christmas in July?!

It certainly would appear that way.

The Smith girls and Jenny represented Placer Theatre Ballet this week at a well-attended storytime event at the downtown Roseville Public Library. Liesey read an "Angelina Ballerina" book as well as the Nutcracker story to a captive audience of children ranging in age from 3-8.

Jenny taught a mini ballet class to the willing participants in the audience. Cute!

The ballerinas taught the children several dance positions, but the most popular activity for three little girls was touching the fringe on the Chinese tutu! Who knew that a costume would steal the show? :-)
Awkward?!!!!

Party Girl, Chinese, and Reed Flute

Auditions for Nutcracker are in a month, so it looks like we'll have Christmas in August, too. And then there will be CHRISTmas in September, October, November, and December (with rehearsals & performances and the traditional Dec. 25th celebration). Let the fun begin.

Berry Pickin'

Miss Millie, her daddy, & I went blackberry picking with the Freeman family on Sunday afternoon. Blackberry, the fruit. Not to be confused with the mobile telephone/e-mail device. These blackberries were ripe, juicy, sweet, & plentiful. Our hands were stained, our bellies & bowls were full. The other kind of blackberry wouldn't be very tasty with crust wrapped around it -- these will be perfect when I finally get around to baking. For now, there are multiple Ziplock bags filled with the luscious fruit stored in the freezer for future consumption. Betty Crocker will no doubt be consulted sometime soon. :-)

I think these gals ate just as many berries as they placed in the bowl. One for the bowl, two for me? Or something like that.

Travel photo hodgepodge

Here are a few more photos that just didn't fit in with any of the other vacation posts, so they will go here:
Markkkk & Jean (Very silly!)

Rachel & Molly

A trio of Smith girls

This is a photo of an old military photograph that hangs on my mother-in-law's wall. This gentleman (Gerhardt) is an Okie relative who served in WWI; however, he died in an army hospital from influenza. When I see this portrait, I am always amazed at how much my Mr. Smith favors this particular Wehrmann ancestor. What do you think?!

Miss Millie was oblivious to the fact that this pose was captured. Love it!

Yikes! There are things that are allowed or tolerated at Grandma & Grandpa's house that we'd never do in California. Both UJ and G-pa took Liesey out for driver's ed. training. Our girl received an "A" from her instructors. :-) It won't be THAT long until we can legally allow her behind the wheel. (I think she is counting down the days. 300 days is a close estimate.)

Safety goggles make a fun fashion statement!

Utensil man has a tool for grilling EVERYTHING!

The Dixie Chopper strikes again...

Sliders, anyone?

We got to visit with Todd & Becky for a couple of hours before we went to the Indy 'port. We could have spent a lot more time catching up with these two dear friends. :-)

Windy City

We just HAD to make a visit to Chi-town during our Midwestern stay. We drove for a few hours to get to East Chicago, IN, then took a 40 minute train ride to Millennium Station in downtown Chicago, IL.

First stop: American Girl Place at Water Tower Place. AG recently relocated its Chicago store to the Magnificent Mile. It is a little girl wonderland! Millie used some of her money (with just a wee bit of $ help from Mom & Dad) to adopt the newest historical doll, Rebecca. She's beautiful!

Sisters!

We then headed for the Russian Pointe Dance Boutique at the other end of Michigan Avenue. This proved to be a dancer's delight! Liesey had an appointment to be fitted in pointe shoes, so she received very personalized attention. She tried on too many shoes to count, but finally found the right ones. Fits can be fun... Our ballerina purchased a few other "must-have" items & left with a big smile on her face.
The tutus in the window start at $1300 & go UP, depending on how it is embellished. No, we didn't buy one. (Click on the photo to see a larger image.)

One happy customer...

Last (and tastiest) stop: Pizzeria Uno on Ohio Street for Chicago style pizza. We had to wait for 45 minutes until our deep dish 'za arrived at our table; however, it was well worth the wait. This culinary treat was for the Smith boys who so patiently endured the shopping at AG and RP and all other shopping stops in between.

Back to the train, back in the car, and over the river & through the woods to Grandmother's (and Grandfather's) house we go... By the time we got on the train, we had walked over 4.5 miles in downtown Chicago. It's a good thing we all wore comfy shoes. It rained so hard on the drive back to my parents' that Mr. Smith couldn't see the road at times -- it was a real toad strangler. Or perhaps a gullywasher?

Independence Day

When we woke up this morning, the bonfire was still smoldering, despite the rain showers. Our Fourth was soggy outdoors, but fun & festive indoors. Mom & Dad hosted a get together of 30 people -- relatives & friends from near & far.

I am going to post a few photos of the day's events. There were no fireworks & no fire dept., just a few streaks of lightning & a boom or two of thunder. Awesome...

Red, white, and PINK? hats!
